The Guardian published some amazing, terrifying photos of Detroit and its inner-ring suburbs. It is a region that was built up for a population more than double its current size. Michigan is the only state in which the population decreased between 2000 and 2010.

From these photos you wouldn't know these institutions simply ran out of money and closed down. It looks like they were closed in a hurry. No allocation was made to box up and store the police records, or sell the books in closed library (which even if they were sold for dimes would be make some money for the rest of the library system). The buildings were just locked and forgotten.
