It's going to be a hard week for Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy.
It's going to be hard for the mayor to explain why his meetings with F.B.I. witness Solomon Dwek were different from the meetings with the same three people which earned Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano a visit to the bureau's offices.
It's going to be hard for Healy to explain why on Thursday he suspended every city employee arrested in the federal sting, but on Friday--after he admitted to being an unnamed co-conspirator in the criminal complaint against his deputy mayor and campaign manager--he decided his own standard did not apply to himself and he would remain working as mayor.Worst of all are going to be those sleepless nights, thinking of what all those arrested former allies, sequestered by their lawyers, have decided to tell the U.S. Attorney.
As it goes down, remember this rich quote from the complaint against campaign treasurer Leona Beldini's:
After defendant Beldini arrived, Beldini was informed by the CW that the CW would be applying for a zone change in approximately two months and to not let such application go to the “bottom” of the pile, to which defendant Beldini responded that she could say “one thing” about [Jerramiah Healy]--[Jerramiah Healy] "remembered" [Jerramiah Healy]'s “friends,” and [Jerramiah Healy]'s word was “gold.”
Indeed Healy's word is just like gold--a negotiable asset, up for sale to the highest bidder. But because you and I aren't building half-million-dollar condos, we weren't informed of the auction. Most of us wouldn't have had the cash to bid with anyway.
Jerramiah Healy must resign or be removed from office.
The City Council is scheduled to meet Wednesday at 10 a.m. I will be reporting from the meeting.
